Three NIH grants awarded to the Tepe Lab in Chemistry
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently awarded 3 research grants to Chemistry Professor Jetze Tepe to support his group’s work aimed at combatting neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Most neurodegenerative disorders are caused by an excess of unstructured proteins which tend to oligomerize and aggregate to form toxic oligomeric species. The Tepe lab is investigating a new therapeutic approach that uses small molecules to stimulate the disposal of these unstructured proteins from cells to prevent neurodegeneration.
Combined, the grants total approximately $1M per year for the next few years to explore this new therapeutic strategy.
