Prof. Demir's paper highlighted as Cover Article in Chemistry – A European Journal
When Chemistry Professor Selvan Demir’s recent paper was accepted by Chemistry – A European Journal, it wasn’t simply chosen for publication, it was also highlighted as a Cover Article, and Prof. Demir was also further asked for an Author Profile.
The artwork was created by Prof. Demir’s grad student Florian Benner. Their group specializes in lanthanide-based single-molecule magnetism. The most important features of this article’s research are highlighted on the cover by emphasizing the approach of the tetraimido sulfate anion to the dysprosium cation through two of the nitrogen donors where the N-S-N moiety constitutes the first coordination sphere to the metal ion, however, without a direct metal-sulfur interaction. Furthermore, the trivalent dysprosium ion is highly anisotropic with an oblate-shaped electron density. The tetraimido sulfate anion can coordinate to dysprosium once and twice, respectively, leading in both cases to single-molecule magnets.
