Shannon Cartwright Selected as ACS Analytical Chemistry Division Outstanding Student for 2021

Shannon Cartwright
Shannon Cartwright

Shannon Cartwright, a senior chemistry major, has been selected as the MSU recipient of the 2021 American Chemical Society Analytical Chemistry Division Outstanding Student in Analytical Chemistry.

This award recognizes outstanding achievements by undergraduate students in analytical chemistry and to encourage further pursuits in the field.  Shannon has long had a desire for a career as a forensic chemist. To that end, she has pursued dual majors at MSU: a BS degree in Chemistry and a BA degree in Criminal Justice. She is also a Student Crime Analysis Intern in the Detroit Police Department and treasurer of the MSU Cold Case Unit club.

In addition, Shannon has been conducting undergraduate research with Gary Blanchard, developing molecular monolayers with permeability that can be changed in real time. Her work has moved this challenging project ahead significantly. She is an outstanding BS Chemistry major and a member of the Honors College.

As a graduate student at MSU next year, Shannon will simultaneously pursue degrees in Chemistry (PhD) and Forensic Science (MS).
