Frank Austin Gooch

1852-1929

Gooch was, throughout his life, a devotee of analytical chemistry, and spent most of his career as professor of that subject at Yale. He devised the "Gooch crucible", a filtering device that saw wide use in gravimetric analysis. He developed numerous classical analytical methods, among them the use of phosphotungstates and phosphomolybdates, volumetric determinations with iodine, and the rapid stirring method for electrolytic determinations.
