Chemistry Professor Demir’s Article Honored on the Cover of Inorganic Chemistry

Chemistry Professor Selvan Demir’s recent article was published by the Inorganic Chemistry journal of the American Chemical Society and highlighted on the Cover. The Demir Group focuses on organometallic chemistry of the lanthanides, actinides, and heavy p-block elements with an emphasis on synthesis, reactivity, spectroscopy, and magnetism.
The restaurant setting illustrates key features of the article:
- The structure of the first homoleptic sandwich complex containing two dibenzocyclooctatetraene dianions, unprecedented for any metal ion. The “sandwich” is additionally showcased on the table.
- The cyclic voltammogram indicates electrochemical reduction of the molecule.
- The EPR spectrum proves that the chemical reduction of the sandwich complex yielded the first compoundcontaining a COT radical anion.
- The magnet illustrates the potential of this type of compound for magnet design.
- The diamagnetic yttrium ion allowed 89Y NMR and DFT studies, respectively.

This discovery may provide access to mono- and multinuclear complexes composed of heavier metals with
applications in small-molecule activation, single-molecule magnetism, and molecular nanowires.
The research was carried out by graduate student Ernesto Castellanos and led by Prof. Selvan Demir.
