Application Deadlines

  • For Fall 2017 admissions; International students have a deadline of December 15th, to submit an application file. If your application is started but all the required documentation has not been received, your application file will not be reviewed until the file is completed.

How to Apply

Please review the following PDF File to view what the Chemistry Application process will look like. A complete application includes the following:

  1. Chemistry Applicant Datasheet (Submit only once):
    Fill out at https://www.chemistry.msu.edu/graduate-program/prospective-students/applicant-datasheet/
  2. MSU Graduate Application (Submit only once):
    Fill out at https://admissions.msu.edu/application/app.asp?AL=G . The MSU code for a Chemistry PhD is 3575 (we do not accept admissions into the Master’s Program). The Chemistry department pays the graduate application fee for those who are admitted into our program. Therefore, you DO NOT need to submit the application payment. We understand that you will be prompted to submit payment however; the Chemistry department still has access to your application without payment and if admitted, the Chemistry department will pay the fee.
  1. Complete your graduate application to the Chemistry Department by logging into your Graduate Education Student Portal using your applicant ID and password issued when you submitted the MSU Graduate Application (step #2)

*IMPORTANT* Please make sure that your name entered onto the MSU Graduate Application is exactly the same as stated on your passport. If you are unsure where or how to enter name information, please contact the Graduate Office as soon as possible.

ALL items are REQUIRED; not submitting any of these documents, will delay review of your application by the search committee:

  1. Submit Statement of Purpose
  2. Submit Academic Purpose
  3. Submit a Minimum of 3 Recommendation Letters
  4. Submit GRE General Score- (ETS codes: 1465 for MSU)- Required per MSU- Department of Chemistry
  5. Submit GRE Advanced Chemistry Score- Strongly recommended
  6. Submit GRE Subject Score- Strongly recommended. Files without this score may be reviewed, but will be reviewed after those files who submitted subject scores
  7. Submit TOEFL or IELTS Score (ETS codes: 1465 for MSU)-
    • We accept photocopies of test scores in order to review applications.
    • TOEFL or IELTS scores older than 2 years will not be accepted per University guidelines
    • All international students MUST submit either a TOEFL or IELTS score. Waivers are not submitted for any students until an offer has been made. Therefore, the MSU- Department of Chemistry needs to know ahead of time what English level you are at.
  8. Transcript(s) - Unofficial transcripts should be uploaded within the online Graduate Education Student Portal for evaluation purposes only.
    1. Should you be offered admittance, we MUST have official sealed and stamped; certification of graduation, degree granting diploma or transcripts from every university or college that you have ever attended, in both original and English language right away. Not submitting this information will cause delay and possible removal of your admittance
    2. Should you be offered admittance, Chinese students MUST obtain verification of transcripts and graduation certificates from the China Academic Degrees and Graduate Education Development Center (CDGDC).  Students should send copies of their documents along with payment to CDGDC.  The CDGDC verifies grades and degrees and then sends via carrier service directly to the Chemistry Department.
    3. Please note that if you are admitted and have not received a degree granting transcript, you will also need to use this process again during your first semester at MSU.

* U.S. DEGREE EQUIVALENCY

Admission to a program leading to a masters or doctoral degree requires completion of a level of education comparable to a four-year U.S. bachelor’s degree. High Scholastic standing and suitable preparation for the intended field of study are also considered. Normally, Michigan State University does not accept three-year bachelor’s degrees, diplomas or certificates as comparable to a four-year U.S. bachelor’s degree

Applications are accepted for Fall Semester, Ph.D. program only. We do not accept applications for Spring or Summer Semester, or Master's program.
