Chemistry Annex Project 2006-2007

Introduction

Our Department has now occupied the Chemistry Building on Shaw Lane for over 40 years. For the past 10 years, we have been working hard to update this facility for modern chemical education and research. MSU has provided a great deal of financial support in the form of two major ventilation upgrades and numerous laboratory renovations.

In March 2005, the State of Michigan announced that they would fund an addition to our building along with a much-needed overhaul of our undergraduate laboratory classrooms. Construction on the addition will began in May of 2006 and should be complete in 18 months. When finished, all of our laboratory classrooms for organic chemistry will be relocated to the first floor of the building. This action, combined with relocation of classrooms and offices to the addition, will yield 16,000 square feet of additional laboratory space to help accommodate expansion of our research programs. The top floor of this addition will house two conference rooms, an equipment room for synthetic chemistry, and a graduate student study room. The graduate student study room will double as a lunch room for the synthetic chemists.

The Department will be responsible for equipping these rooms with furniture, instrumentation and appliances. Your help in supporting any aspect of this project would be greatly appreciated. All levels of support are truly appreciated. If you wish to make a contribution electronically, use the link below. If you would like more details on the ways of supporting the department or this expansion, please contact Suzette Hittner at the College of Natural Sciences Development Office at (517) 353-9855.

MSU has always strived to construct appropriate, efficient, and economical buildings. To further these ends, MSU is now participating in the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) program to promote sustainable construction practices and buildings. LEED is an initiative of the U. S. Green Building Council, a coalition of building industry leaders. The Chemistry Building Annex will be the first MSU building to be LEED accredited. See the following for further information about the LEED program.

Recycling is just one of the pieces of Green Building or LEED The following URL will track the recycling aspects of the project.
