A retaining wall was constructed by first sinking 2' holes down below
the level of the new floor (sub-basement level). These holes were
drilled at 6' intervals around the periphery of the project. The large
2' caissons keep the sides of the hole from collapsing. Once the holes
were drilled, large I beams were cemented into the holes. The caissons
were then removed. This picture is looking west from the vicinity of
the loading dock. large image |

Excavation begins. The steam tunnel that services the Chemistry
building has been uncovered. The workers are using a concrete saw to
slice the top of the steam tunnel off. You can see the retaining walls
in the background. The I-beams were about 6' apart and the boards were
2" oak planks. large image |

The top of the steam tunnel has been removed and the sides are to be
removed next. Looking east toward the loading dock. large image |

The top and sides of the steam tunnel have been removed. The pipes on
the right of the steam tunnel are the steam line and steam condensate
return. The smaller pipe on the left is a 3" conduit containing the
optical fiber cables providing the data communication links to the
campus backbone. Looking east toward the loading dock. large image |

Excavation continues. The large excavator is lowering a small excavator
into the hole. Looking west from the loading dock. large image |

Excavation team work. The small excavator brings soil to the end of the
hole and the large excavator lifts it out. Looking west from the loading

right is the duct bank that brought the power into the building. Looking
