If you need to use Outlook in Exchange Server mode (see http://www.chemistry.msu.edu/Help/outexch.html) or Microsoft sharing (access shared folders and printers in the Chemistry Building) from outside the building:
(These instructions work only for Windows XP Home or Windows XP Pro)
1. Open Control Panel Double-click on Network and Internet Connections:

2. Click "Create a connection to the network at your workplace":

In the New Connection Wizard, Choose "Virtual Private Network connection", then click the Next > button:

Type something meaningful to you in the Company Name field, like "Chemistry VPN connection" then click Next> :

In the hostname or IP address field type "vpn.chemistry.msu.edu" then click Next>

Choose either "Anyone's use" or "My use only" (you decide) then Next>

Check the "Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop" box and click Finish.

You'll now have a new icon on your desktop to our VPN. It works like a dial-up connection: whenever you want to use Outlook to MSU Chemistry, or connect to file or printer shares, click the icon and log in. Use your Chemistry domain username and password (your "POOHBAH" password) when asked to log in:

Now you can use Outlook in Exchange Server mode or connect to Chemistry Windows computer shares and printers from home or on the road.
