To configure Outlook 2003 (which we can provide at no cost to you, if you have an email address on chemistry.msu.edu) in its native "Exchange Server Mode", perform the following steps:
(If starting Outlook 2003 for the first time)
1. Start Outlook 2003, and you'll see:

Click Next>
2. You're asked if you want to configure an E-mail account. Choose "Yes" and click the Next> button:

3. Choose the "Microsoft Exchange Server" selection and click Next>:

4. In the Email Accounts dialog, type "PO" in the Microsoft Exchange Server text box. If you want to use Outlook 2003's advanced Junk E-mail Filter, you MUST check the "Use Cached Exchange Mode" box.
(Caution: This choice also keeps a copy of EVERYTHING in your E-mail account on your local hard drive. If your hard drive has limited free space OR if you have a lot of E-mail and are connecting through a dial-up connection, this may not be a good choice for you.)
In the User Name text box, type your chemistry domain (POOHBAH) username. Pressing the "Check Name" button will check to make sure these settings are correct. If they are, both "PO" and "yourusername" will be underlined. If not, then either you don't have network access from where you are (see http://www.chemistry.msu.edu/Help/vpn.asp) OR your username isn't correct OR your chemistry domain account hasn't yet been mailbox-enabled. Call Tom Carter (x280) or Paul Reed (x331) for help.
Press "More Settings..."

and then select the "Security" tab in the next dialog. Check the box in the "Encryption" group to encrypt the data flowing between your computer and the Exchange Server. Click "OK" and then click Next>

Click Finish and you're done! Outlook 2003 will now start in Exchange Server Mode. All your information (email, appointments, contacts, notes, etc.) will reside on the Exchange Server and be accessible from anywhere (and get backed-up every night).
