Application Procedures

If you would like to receive a hard copy of the Departmental Brochure, fill out an electronic request for information. If you wish to apply, you may continue with the application process.

Fill out an electronic (on-line) Applicant Datasheet for graduate studies in Chemistry and we will begin an application file for you. The deadline to begin an application file for international students is December 1st for the following Fall Semester. Although we accept applications after that date, we cannot guarantee processing in a timely manner. Domestic students do not have a deadline to begin an application file, but we recommend that they begin their application as soon as possible.
Fill out an electronic (on-line) University Application. The MSU code for a Chemistry PhD is 3575. For a MS, 3573. It is not necessary to pay the application fee. The Chemistry Department processes its own graduate applications and then pays the graduate application fee for those who are admitted into our program.
Download the Adobe Acrobat form for your letters of reference.
4. Application Materials:
Mail the following application materials directly to the Chemistry Department.

Transcripts
Resume/Statement of Purpose
3 Letters of Recommendation
GRE General Scores
(ETS codes: 1465 for MSU, 0301 for Chemistry)
GRE Advanced Chemistry Score (International Applicants)
TOEFL or TSE Score (International Applicants)

  • We accept photocopies of test scores in order to review applications, but we must receive official scores for students who receive an offer of admission (before the student arrives at MSU).
  • The GRE Subject is required for international students. Files without this score may be reviewed, but files with this score will be given preference.
  • The GRE Subject is not required for domestic students, but it is recommended.
  • International applicants from non-English speaking countries are required to take either the TOEFL or the TSE in order to have their application reviewed. You may check the List of English Speaking Countries to see if you are exempt from this requirement by clicking HERE.
  • We must have official transcripts from every university or college that you have ever attended. International applicants must include official transcripts translated into English.
Check the status of your application to the graduate program. As soon as we receive an Applicant Datasheet or University Application and enter it into our database, a status page is created. The status page indicates what items we have received, and will also indicate a decision once it has been made.
