Scientific Instrument Services Facility

The Scientific Instrument Services Facility, located in room 28 and referred to informally as the Electronics Shop, serves the instructional and research needs of the Department with design, fabrication, modification and repair of scientific instrumentation. Service to outside departments is also provided on a limited basis when the internal work load permits. Charges are $40 per hour. The facility is open from 8:00 AM to 12:00 Noon and from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM on weekdays.

The Facility is primarily responsible for the repair, modification, and maintenance of such instrumentation, among other types, as that used for mass spectrometry, x-ray crystallography, gas and high pressure liquid chromatography, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV, VIS and IR spectroscopy, and related equipment, including various lasers and power sources. Shop personnel also collaborate with those from the glassblowing and machine shops when jobs require multiple skills.

David Cedarstaff and Scott Sanderson are the full time Instrument Specialists within the Facility and they have considerable experience dealing with electronic, electro-optical and electro-mechanical systems. They can be reached at 517-355-9715, Exts. 369 and 370.
