RESEARCH AWARDS

Dreyfus Award - Postdoctoral Program in Environmental Chemistry; deadline: May 24, 2007
The Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation seeks to further the development of scientific leadership in the field of environmental chemistry with a postdoctoral fellowship program.  The award of $120,000 over two years will be based on a proposal, submitted by an established researcher in the field, judged to be exceptional, both in its potential for significant contributions to environmental science, both in its potential for significant contributions to environmental science, and in the arrangements to ensure the education of the fellow as required to become a leading scientist in the field.  The spirit of this program is for research leaders in all areas of environmental chemistry to recruit excellent young Ph.D. graduates, preferable from outside the field, and provide them with the highest caliber of education in environmental science and research.

Additional information and application / nomination procedures are available on the Foundation Web site, http://www.dreyfus.org

The 2007 Crossborder Workshop on Laser Science

Dear Colleagues,

You are invited to participate in the 2007 Crossborder Workshop on Laser Science www.crossborder2007.org being held May 17th to 19th at the University of Toronto.  The Crossborder Workshop is an annual student-run meeting bringing together researchers from both sides of the Canadian-American border with a shared interest in optics and laser science.  The environment is relaxed and informal with plenty of opportunity for questions, learning and discussion.

This year's conference will feature invited talks from some of the world's top optical scientists in biology, chemistry, engineering and physics.
Plenary speakers will be:
*Chris Monroe (University of Michigan) - Manipulating trapped ions with light *Paul Corkum (NRC) - Attosecond pulses and attosecond measurement *Dwayne Miller (University of Toronto) - Catching chemical dynamics in action

Invited talks will be given by:
   * Albert Stolow (Queen's/NRC) - Ultrafast chemical dynamics
   * Franco Wong (MIT) - Quantum correlations in optical parametric oscillators
   * Steven Johnson (MIT) - Advances in photonic bandgap theory and materials
   * Kevin Resch (Waterloo) - Quantum computing and quantum cryptography with light
   * Nick Bigelow (Rochester) - Interaction between light and degenerate quantum gases
   * Joseph Eberly (Rochester) - The dynamics of entanglement, negative group velocities
   * Robert Boyd (Rochester) - Quantum imaging,  slow light and superluminality
   * Alexander Gaeta (Cornell) - Photonic crystal fibers and active photonics in silicon
   * Mikhail Lukin (Harvard) - Electromagnetically-induced transparency and the storage of light
   * Cecile Fradin (McMaster) - optical investigation of biological processes
   * Peter Herman (Toronto) - Photonics fabrication with femtosecond lasers

Student Pugwash USA 14th National Conference on Science and Social Responsibility:  Promoting the Integrity of Science April 12 – 15, 2007 National Academies Keck Center, (SPUSA) is an educational, nonprofit organization that strives to add a dimension to scientific study that goes beyond formulas and figures. Activities encourage young people to probe the reasons for scientific advancement and the implications of technology on citizens' everyday lives.
While examining all sides of an issue, SPUSA increases students' ability to think independently about the issues that affect society -- issues that range from international conflict to environmental protection, from genetics research to civil rights. SPUSA focuses on the interplay that lies at the juncture of science, technology, and public policy.
