A University award that is given in recognition of meeting classroom responsibilities and for scholarly promise as a graduate assistant.

Nominations for Teacher-Scholar Awards and Excellence-In-Teaching Citations are based primarily on teaching. Nominations for Teacher-Scholar Awards are limited to instructors, assistant professors, associate professors who have served on the faculty for at least two semesters, but not more than seven academic years. Nominations for Excellence-In-Teaching Citations are limited to candidates who have held a half-time graduate teaching assistantship for at least two semesters (including the semester in which the nomination is made) and who have assumed a significant measure of responsibility for the conduct of undergraduate courses. Nominations for Teacher-Scholar Awards and Excellence-In-Teaching Citations are submitted to college level committees for initial screening. Each of these committees then forwards a maximum of two nominations for each award to the All-University Awards Committee. This All-University Awards Committee, appointed by the Provost and composed of members of the faculty and student body, makes the final selection.

This original graduate student award was created by the CNS Alumni Association in 1994 to recognize and support outstanding graduate students within the College. This one-time stipend is often used for professional travel, for the purchase of software needed to further research, or purchase reference texts. The award was renamed in the Fall 1996 to memorialize Tracy Anne Hammer, 1995 co-recipient of the award, who was a victim of the TWA Flight 800 disaster, July 1996.
